About the town

Church Street ModburyModbury is a small historic town of just under 2,000 people. It can be found about 10 miles to the east of Plymouth and about 5 miles from the beautiful South Devon coast. Modbury is the local centre for the surrounding villages and has an excellent range of shops and services. You can find out more about them at the Chamber of Trade web pages.

It is a very active community with many clubs and societies. Some of these are listed on this page. One of the main reasons many give for living in Modbury is the friendly people here.

The area surrounding Modbury offers open views across South Devon, the rich life of Devon hedgerows, and echoes through history from the English Civil War.  You can download a leaflet about the walks and trails around Modbury here.

meadowThe history of Modbury has been researched in depth by the Local History Society and Unique Heritage of Modbury website has a wealth of information and pictures.

Thanks to the efforts of Rebecca Hosking and the local traders Modbury became the first plastic bag free town in the UK in May 2007. You can find out more about the damage plastic bags do to the environment by looking at the plastic free website.
